Reduce Size of Word Documents

Saves space and speeds up loading

I was sent a Word document recently, which although only a few pages long, was over 4.4Mb in size. The reason for the large file size was the inclusion of full scale images.

As I needed this document on our web site as a pdf, it was important to reduce the size of the original.

Here’s how to do it -

Open the document in Word 2007 (this probably works okay in 2010).

Within the body of the document select one picture, and click with the right mouse button to bring up the ‘context sensitive’ menu

Select ‘Format Picture’ then click on ‘Compress’

By choosing the options shown here, the Word document was reduced from 4.4Mb to 202Kb.

The pdf created from this Word document can be found in our animations post – here
