How to start in safe mode
Many Office programmes have multiple add-ins that are run along with the package – these are often the reasons the programmes hang.
If an office programme hangs, it’s a good idea to start the particular application in safe mode. This example is using Office 2003 on a Windows XP machine – similar ideas work for Office 2007 and Windows 7.
Click the start button and choose run (in Windows 7 simply start typing in the space)

Click the browse button and navigate to the correct programme space.
Here’s the location of Word 2003

Note the quotes. Place your cursor in the line of text and scroll to the right hand side. Enter the additional text as shown here.

Click OK – the screen will open the programme with no files or add-ons

In my experience (and I’ve been using Word since just after the Industrial Revolution) it’s best to now close it and start it normally.
All the little ducks shold now be lined up nicely.
