Finding Duplicate Files

Preparing for Synctoy

The situation is this – you want to make your laptop synch with your shared drive on the server. There’s a great free toy from Microsoft for this called Synctoy. First make sure that your two drives are clear of duplicates BEFORE you start.

Say good bye to a day, or have a look at  this duplicate file finder at Codeplex.

The programme doesn’t need installing, and you probably need local administrator rights to run it on your PC. On one of my PCs with SmartScreen on Internet Explorer I did receive extra security warnings. The other options allowed the programme to run.

In my case I’m initially going to check out the drive, so just click the ‘Search Now’ button

As the process runs, the duplicate (and often triplicate etc.) copies of the files are shown in the window. When the programme has run, you have a few options.

If you find a large number of duplicates, it’s easier to save the results to file and work through the file. The delete option in the window should only be used if you know for certain. This option deletes your file – it doesn’t place it in the Recycle Bin.

I’ve run this package through 2 PCs with incredible results.

Now to Sync them Smile
