Move Posts and Pages

Windows Live Writer. Is this enough reason to keep Windows XP?

Windows Live Writer is wonderful – I can’t imagine using WordPress without having Writer around.

BUT, there’s always a but, the old version of Writer has a fantastic trick that Writer 2010 doesn’t have. The ability to download from blogs/web sites in addition to uploading posts and pages.

An example

Over the last year or so, my blog www.mikemcsharry.com has grown and grown – getting slightly out of order. I’d like to lift some of the posts from www.mikemcsharry.com and make them into pages in the instruction area of www.systemed.co.uk.

This entry is being created in Writer as a page on www.systemed.co.uk.

Keep saving ‘local’ copies as you go along – this is going to be heavy duty on some PCs.

1. Access your old blog

Open a ‘new instance’ of Writer. So go to your programme list and start Writer again

On the new instance, make sure you are accessing the correct place.

Then select the ‘more button’ – then ensure in the next window you have selected the correct blog, and request the number of pages or posts you wish to retrieve.

Select the blog post you’re interested in

Download blog to PC

You’ll be prompted…

Livewriter download prompt

This opens the post -

Open downloaded wordpress blog post

Now open another instance of LiveWriter

In these instructions I’ll highlight the entries in the new post/page with a border.

This time select the destination website/blog and specify that you want to create  a new page

LiveWriter window

Decide where the new page will be in the structure

Start a wordpress page in another site

Back to the source –  click ctrl-a (to select all) then ctrl-c to copy to clipboard

Flick back to the destination page

Click ctrl-v to paste, and here’s your new page – in Writer – aimed at the destination website/blog

start new page in LiveWriter

There may be some tidying up to do, and in this case I may re-write the text a bit. (The flow of the text suited the blog, I’ll re-order some to suit the website).

Give the page a title then select ‘Post draft to blog’ from the Save draft drop down menu

Post draft to new home

Now – looking on our destination blog/website control panel we find -

Display on WordPress control panel

On the destination site you may then use theme and tagging options to tidy up the post/page.

On the source site you may clear the text entry and put a ‘this page moved to’ with a link to your new website/blog post/page location.
